Runtime Flexibility and Robustness

Open5GCore features the essential items for cloud-based elasticity and customization support. These features enable the transparent deployment of multiple components of the same type addressing the scaling in cloud environments as well as the distribution of the load in distributed or edge scenarios.

The following components were considered:

  • MME Load Balancing – a low footprint S1-AP load balancer (NG-AP on demand) for appropriate MME selection
  • Network Slice Selection Function (NSSF) – an implementation of the network slice selection based on 3GPP DECOR
  • State sharing mechanisms for 4G control plane and 5G SBA – it includes a set of specific mechanisms which enable stateless processing in components including:
    • Distributed shared memory based on redis.io
    • Own ASN1 based protocol for state broadcasting
    • Replication of forwarding rules to multiple switches
